La Purisima Mission Bells

This week I visited La Purisima mission. If you havent been there in a while it's a great place to visit. They are always working on some creative example of how life must have been for the inhabitants of the mission. If you wander behind the main building of the mission, where this shot was taken you'll actually find some displays of the mission store, a spot where people working and visiting the mission could trade their goods. And a mill where you can get up close to a mill stone that looks like it's ready to grind flour. All it needs are the burros. Of course don't ask the guys out front, them and their beautiful Ox friend are retired. They just spend time entertaining the visitors and absorbing as much love as they can.

El Presidio

I recently spent some time at one of our local gems. Every once in a while it's good to go play tourist a bit in your own backyard. Although I do enjoy the views of the Presidio from the outside like this, it had been a while since I took the full tour. It was quite apparent the caretakers have been working dilligently to bring this piece of history back to life. It makes for a wonderful walk back in time on a beautiful Santa Barbara afternoon.

Dinner at La Purisima

Although our Santa Barbara Mission has a wonderful historic tour with some authentic artifacts, there is nothing quite like spending some time in a mission where they have painstakingly restored and recreated on a large scale what the day to day life must have been like when the missions were the full communities they were designed to be. La Purisima offers the space and flexibility to almost step into the past. It is a wonderful experience.

Sunset Over El Presidio de Santa Barbara

This is one of those local landmarks that has been photographed a million or so times. I wander by every now and then thinking of new ways to look at it. This evening I had some help. Nothing like a spectacular sunset to make things look exciting.

La Purisima Mission Fence

As I look back I see that my site has been the FLOWER of the day lately. So I thought I would find some good California architecture. I really like the cart and the random fence. And that is a real fence! As umm... impromptu as it looks there is real livestock in that pen.

La Purisima Mission Bell

This was taken the first day experimenting with a new present, a polarizing filter. It made the sky much more intense.

There is a never-ending supply of wonderful subjects at the California missions.

La Purisima Room

I like this room, just simple and plain. This mission has been destroyed and rebuilt at least once in it's history. Fortunately it is in pretty good shape now. It's a beautiful place.

Mission Gate

This is a gate in a wall around La Purisima Mission in Lompoc California. You can see another of my images of this mission here and read more about the mission itself. I really like the archways and shapes of this Mission.

La Purisima

This is a shot of the main Chapel at La Purisima mission. (or more officially Mission La Purisima Concepcion de Maria Santisima) It is the eleventh of twenty-one California missions founded on December 8, 1787 by Franciscan Padre Presidente Fermin Francisco Lasuen. This mission has undergone massive restoration, it was originally wiped out on December 21, 1812.
