Bougainvillea [Bougainvillea spectabilis] hanging in front of the evening sun
There is always something blooming around here! Which is great for someone who loves to take flower pictures. This is the Bougainvillea that we have coaxed over our back fence, it's always happy. So happy in fact I just had to tuck all it's new growth in so the gardeners don't come by and cut it.As I recall, last year this time I almost had to change the name of the site to "The Calla Lily of the Day," since they go wild this time of year too. Fortunately, this year we planted some spring bulbs out front and they are looking good already so I'll have lots of subjects to keep things interesting. Now all I need is more time to play with my cameras. Too bad that won't grow as easily. :-D

I just love these flowers. Does any color bloom more quickly than others. Can I keep them in a pot on the patio? |

Hi Adrienne! I don't really know for sure if any color blooms more quickly. We have pink and red ones, our neighbor has a pink and white one (Thai Delight) and they all bloom almost constantly here (Southern California). I know there are yellow ones in this area, but I don't see them blooming much. So my guess would be the red ones are most prolific. Really, the way you care for it, what you feed it and the environment it lives in will probably have the most effect on how often it blooms. We give ours Peter's Bloom Food, but really any citrus or flowering food with a high phosphorus (middle) number will make them bloom. Ours like lots of water here, but they will not bloom if they are over watered. My wife says they will flower more if they are pinched back (but we rarely have the heart to do that). As far as keeping them in a pot, I have had one in a pot for about 10 years and we have had some nice surprises from it... Take a look here. We recently got a trellis for it, and that has made it much happier than just growing in the pot like a shrub. Of course, the one in the ground is about 10x the size. -Bill Heller |
