Flowering Plum Tree [Prunus cerasifera var. atropurpurea]??
Tomorrow is the first day of spring, doesn't feel like it right now (10:10 pm) but this was the scene just down the street this afternoon. These trees are beautiful and in full bloom. They are some kind of Flowering Plum, not 100% sure which kind. There seem to be a lot of them!

purpleleaf plum tree | |
We have 2 Purpleleaf plum trees. We got them last year and both of them bloomed fine. This Spring one bloomed fine and the other one just has small buds on it and that's as far as it got. It's had buds for about 4-5 weeks now. The limbs are limber so that's good but it just won't produce leaves. Like I said our other plum tree is fine. I have asked 2 different nurseries and nobody can really tell me anything. Please e-mail me and let me know if you have any answeres on this problem. Thank-You, Debbie Sarkees |

RE: purpleleaf plum tree | |
Hi Debbie, I am not an expert on these trees, but my wife did some looking (she is more of a botanical genius than I will ever claim to be). The main thing she found concerning the buds stopping was weather fluctuations can cause that and like you said the important thing is the limbs still sound healthy. Of course you would think that both trees would react the same, but perhaps one is a little stronger or a little more sheltered. Even with the same conditions, individual trees bloom at different times and perhaps the one that is further along found a more hospitable window in the strange weather this year. Where do you live? Do both trees get the same water and food? How close together are they? Is one closer to your home than the other? -Bill Heller |

PURPLE LEAF PLUM TREE | |
Hi Bill, I love in Peoria, AZ. About 8 years ago, I purchased a home that had 2 purpleleaf plum trees in the backyard. When viewing the home, I couldn't believe my eyes at the beauty of the plumleaf trees. Well, after about 2 years both trees died. I recently had a misquett tree removed from my home and have replaced it with a 15 foot purpleplum tree. Any suggestions on the care? Is this a good time to plant them? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. |
