Calla Drops

The sun was in and out of the clouds when I took this shot. I only had about 30 seconds while the light was interesting.

Lilies in the Corner

Another shot of the Calla Lilies in the corner of our yard (cactus corner). As you can tell I have not got out of the back yard with my camera lately. Of course, there are enough beautiful things there to keep me busy for years.

When the Epiphyllum get going they really go wild. This blossom (the red one) is from the beautiful cactus that got us kicked out of our last apartment. Well, maybe not that dramatic, but I sure was not going to trim the cactus like the land lord wanted!

The lilies lived here when we moved in. They are actually in the ground in what we now call "Cactus Corner". They have had to stretch a little taller to see the sun. But they make an amazing contrast with the cactus and they always seem to be intertwined, I like to think they are friends.

Calla Valentine

Happy Valentine's Day!

I was trolling the logs and it looks like there have been quite a few people looking for Calla Lily photos lately. (as well as Valentine's flowers) This was the scene a couple of days ago in the back yard, and I thought the shape of the flower was particularly fitting for the day.

Have a wonderful valentines day!

Backlit Calla

I particularly like the glowing edge of this lily on the left. The curves that you can follow in the shadows are interesting too.

Thinking of You

I was looking through some of my images and this one was just crying out to be a greeting card. That is how many of my cards are created.

Colorful Calla

It looks like I was walking through some deep jungle to find this one. Actually it was the Home Depot jungle. They had an amazing display of Calla Lilies! So many I could not decide which to bring home. But I think I am going to go back and see if this one is still there.

Purple Calla Lilies

It's been cloudy and rainy lately but there was some nice sun this weekend. Was a good time to see all the flowers out for spring. These were in a big display at Home Depot. That place is almost like a botanical garden.

Alien Flowerscape

This looks to me like rolling hills on a strange landscape. And, I guess from the fly's point of view it is.

Backlit Lily

Well there have been quite a few Calla Lilies on the photo of the day lately. But thats because they are going wild around here!

This one is a little different than my usual razor sharp feel, but I like the painting feel of it especially the leaves in the background.

New Lily

When I posted a shot of a lily next to this one I said that I missed the snow this time of year. Well, I don't have to miss it any more! We had a nice dusting of snow on the Mountain here down to about 1000 feet. Didn't last long but there is supposedly more on the way!

Evening Lily

There is always something beautiful just around the corner. Sometimes I miss the snow this time of year, but there are advantages to our climate in Santa Barbara.

Calla Lily from the Shadows

There are beautiful things all around. As with many of my photos, this one was as close as my back yard.

Carmel Lilies

Carmel Lilies

Ahh September was a busy month, and I got a little behind. When that happens I like to come back and put things in these spaces for those of you who come looking. (Oh, and if you haven't found it yet, there is a link in the upper right corner to a calendar that displays thumbnails of the photos.)

This is a different view on the lilies in the photo of the day from April 22.

I usually carry a number of lenses with me, especially in a beautiful place like Carmel. And, I rarely take one shot from one angle. I have learned from taking photos with my best friend to explore as many angles as possible.

Monterey Pine Lily

Monterey Pine Lily

I used to live at an apartment that was surrounded by beautiful pine trees. These lilies grew under one of the trees that I walked by often. I took quite a few photos of them but I think this one reminds me the most of the feeling of standing under the tree in the late morning with the sun filtering through the branches.

Moonlit Lily

Saturday was a really good show. I pulled out a few new Hummingbird images for this weekend and they were very popular.

This was another image that caught a few eyes. It was one of the first images I enlarged years ago when I was just starting to think about showing my photographs.

Walking in Carmel

I thought about taking a photo like this before I found the specific subject. My fish-eye lens is an interesting tool, but you have to think a little more about the composition when using it. Since it is so wide compared to a "normal" lens or your normal point of view, it makes everything look further away.

My idea was to put flowers in the foreground with a larger subject behind them. Since the lens can make a larger subject less interesting by including too much. You have nothing to focus on then. The lens was less than an inch from the flower at the bottom of the photo.

Lily Curves

Another of the beautiful things as close as the back yard. This was right after the sprinklers went off, on a foggy morning. The dim light made the background dark and everything a little softer. But this shot was one of only a few taken as the fog parted a little which made the drops a little brighter and sharper. To see the difference in the light you can see another shot here, taken only minutes earlier.

Abstract Lily

Well this was one of the few days I missed posting. So I'm trying to go back and put something nice in these little holes. This photo was taken at the same time as this image.

Lily Drops

So, I was sitting at my computer (as I am told I do too often) when my best friend said "Hey grab your camera and come look at this!." Seems that the sprinkler had reached the new Calla Lilies that just came up in the back yard. About a half hour later and a couple rolls of film I was back at my computer, but much happier!
