Evening Over Alice Keck Park

This is Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens, one of the most amazing spots right in the middle of downtown Santa Barbara. At one point they wanted to turn this piece of land into a very large condo development. Fortunately thanks to some dedicated people, we have a place only a couple blocks from our main city street, State Street where you can enjoy a retreat from the concrete and steel (or in our case the stucco and red tile roofs).

Alice Keck Park Evening Lamp Post

Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens is beautiful any time, but at twilight it becomes almost magical. This was from a nice evening walk a while back. Looking at this image I can almost hear the sounds of the wildlife settling down for the evening. The ducks seem to like to stretch the evening out as long as possible in the park. Trolling the lake for a last snack before bed time.

Alice Keck After Dark

Looking out across the duck pond at Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens standing in the Gazebo. This is a quite long exposure after dark wandering the park. There were still people enjoying the park with their dogs even at this time of day. It was a really beautiful evening!

Evening At Alice's Garden 360 degree Panorama

At the end of a wonderful evening of photography, I found myself driving by Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens. The look of the glowing lights with the remaing glow of the sunset were enough to make me circle the block to think about what kind of a view I could get. I was glad I stopped. This is from about 20 feet above the edge of the duckpond, looking down on the pond and the gazebo.

Alice Keck Park's Australian Tea Tree, Virtual Reality

I really love Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens, the variety of wildlife and plants right in the middle of the city is unparalleled. This beautiful tree is at the corner of Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens, it's one of my favorite trees in Santa Barbara. I have no idea how old it is, but you can see on the map of the garden which trees existed before the garden and this is one of them. No surprise, normally when you see Tea Trees they are trimmed to look more like bushes. This guy must have seen some amazing things in his lifetime.

Alice's Hibiscus

Alice's Hibiscus

It has been a good summer for Hibiscus. So good in fact I could not be sure where I took this. One day I shot some pink Hibiscus at Alice Keck's garden and a day or two later I shot some very similar Hibiscus near Butterfly beach at the same time of day. Good thing I was using my digital camera, I could check the date.

Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens Gazebo VR

When I posted the image of the day on the sixth there was a little disapponintment that it was not a 360° image. Well here it is! Takes a little more time to build this kind of image.

Of course, this is across the lake from the other shot, in the gazebo. This is one of my favorite spots in Santa Barbara. If you are new to the site and like the 3D images be sure to check out another one of my favorite Santa Barbara spots.

A couple days ago I was working on a particularly difficult statistics problem. (mmm math what a concept.) In the midst of my preparations to fling my computer out the window my wife suggested a nice walk at Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens. Or as we like to call it... Alice Keck Park Park.

The clouds were beautiful and it was a wonderful evening. I wish I could say I came home and solved the problem right away, but at least I got a lot of really beautiful shots out of it. And I was much happier continuing on my statistics project.

Oh yeah, I've also been tinkering with some other images that are not my own. I have not been able to figure out how to get my own camera there yet so I had to work with what was available.

Conducting Duck

Conducting Duck

She looks like she is conducting an orchestra. Or perhaps directing traffic? Either way she is really into what she is doing. She was actually alternating between stretching and flapping hard and I got her in mid-flap.

Duck Taking Flight

I think these are the same ducks from our last trip to the gardens! I think she said something to insult the Koi. Because the Koi jumped out of the water near her and made her take off like this. Of course I can't say I blame her. The Koi was twice her size!

Birthday Turtle

I took the day off today and wandered around taking pictures. This was my wife's pick, she really likes turtles.

We watched this guy slip off of the lily pad slowly and then climb back up.

Lil Brown Bird

I like these guys, they are quite comical.

They are not native to the United States, they are actually from Europe and Africa. But they seem to thrive anywhere by mooching off of gullible humans who like them and think they are quite comical.

Bells of the Valley

Bells of the Valley

This was a beautiful little flower we found during a recent walk. It did not last long though, the next time we went back it was gone. Luckily I have a good way to save it.   :-D

Chinese Toon Trees

Chinese Toon Trees

This is a beautiful pink tree at Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens, in Santa Barbara. There was no name on it like most of the plants in the gardens, and every time we go lately we see people trying to figure out what it is. Thanks to the Internet we were able to track it down.

Apparently the bright pink foliage is a springtime thing. If you look closely at the plants you can see them starting to fade to green at places.

This plant is actually used as a vegetable and in traditional Chinese medicine. 'Course that would not be the woody parts. They use them as young shoots, or even smaller, like bean sprouts.

Spring Starflower

Spring Starflower

Another shot from Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens. I like the way the petals on this flower alternate, three on top and three on the bottom. Looking it up online was quite an adventure, apparently it has about five different names. [Tristagma uniflorum] [Milla uniflora] [Triteleia uniflora] [Brodiaea uniflora]

Alice's Ducks

Alice's Ducks

We had another nice walk through Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens today. (Commonly mistaken as just Alice Keck Park. As in Alice Keck's park, but her name was Alice Keck Park, and it is her Memorial Garden.) I only point this out because it was not entirely clear to me until today. Actually, I guess I just never thought about it before today.

So, on to the Ducks. They were chasing each other around the pond the whole time we were there. Ahhh, spring is here! :-D

April Fools' Flowers

April Fools' Flowers

We had a nice walk today in Alice Keck Park Gardens. Been spending too much time in front of my computer and not enough time out enjoying life. (or behind my camera!)

Not sure what kind of flower this is though, my botanist will probably be able to tell me when she wakes up.

Ruffled Iris

Ruffled Iris

Actually, it might be a Siberian Iris. I could not find anything quite like it online and I looked at a lot of Irises. Come to think of it I have not seen an Iris like this anywhere before. They are growing in a park in downtown Santa Barbara.
