Sunset Exercise
I went to the doctor and, big surprise, I have to eat
healthier and get more exercise! (should have seen that comin')
On the plus side, walking is his recommended way to do that.
And I figure, if you're gonna walk, you might as well do it
someplace nice!
This is Butterfly Beach in Santa Barbara. It is one of the
less traveled beaches around here. It is not in an area that
you would normally stumble on. And it is our favorite beach.
So after making one good pedometer out of two broken ones,
we had a nice sunset walk. Oh, I mean... we went out and got
some exercise!

Santa Barbara Sunset at the Wharf
This image reminds me of visiting Santa Barbara,
about nine years ago, on vacation with my best friend.
When we first got here she told me that she had to warn me
that I probably was not going to want to leave.
She was right! But Santa Barbara was not the only thing
I got attached to. Now that we live here, my best friend
has also become my wife!

More shots from yesterday's wharf walk.
Actually, it's a combination of 9 shots.
It was a beautiful evening.

Stearns Twilight
Tonight we took a walk on Stearns Wharf.
It was hot and we were hoping to cool off.
Of course, we were not the only ones with that
idea. It was pretty crowded, but it was a nice walk and a beautiful evening.

Gettin' the Dress
Just scanning the film that was in the camera
right before the wedding. This was the evening
that I took my wife :-D to try on her wedding dress.
I, of course, had to sit in the car and wait.
Fortunately, the hound dog and I had the camera
to entertain ourselves.

Birthday Sunset
This one was posted a little late.
But, it is a belated birthday
present for my best friend who is now (January 16th)
my wife. Yesterday, she asked me what picture she got for her day.
And, due to some major wedding preparations
at that time I was getting behind on the photo of the day
so she got to choose her own.

Carmel Beach Fire
The people on the beach look almost insignificant under this
awesome display. And, believe me that is how
it made you feel! And, at the same time, it filled
you with awe.
Some days I see things that make me
wanna kick myself for leaving my camera at home. The days
like this one make up for them many times over!

Sunset Beach Walk
Carmel beach is a beautiful place to watch the sun set.
I took a lot of shots that evening, but this is my favorite.
I wonder what they were talking about.

Sunset Reflection
Well I tried to find a Turkey, but I guess a couple of
sea gulls will have to do!
Happy Thanksgiving anyway!

Santa Barbara Sunset
This is the view from the stairway to my old office.
It may not have been the most fun place to work, but it
was a great place to watch our beautiful winter sunsets.

Santa Barbara Sunset
There is an artist in the Sunday Art walk on
Cabrillo Blvd. (where this shot is taken) who
does woodcut images, silhouettes with a gradient color in the
background. These evenings, the beautiful
cloudless sunsets remind me of those.

Stearns Sunset
Fall has finally arrived. Last week still felt like summer.
During the summer there is not usually enough
moisture in the air to make an interesting sunset
so I always enjoy this time of year.

Santa Barbara Sunset
We live in an odd little spot on the coast.
If you look at a map of the California
coastline there is a small area that
runs from east to west. That is where Santa Barbara
is. As a result, the sun does not set over the water
as you would expect it to on the west coast.
Moving straight out from the coast,
once you pass the channel islands about 25 miles
out, the closet land is Antarctica.

Laguna Sunset
My friend has taken up Sumi-e Ink painting and she is quite good at
it. (I'll add some links once she has her images online.)
I think this image has a bit of Japanese art feel to it. Although,
it would probably have to have fewer branches to qualify. Perhaps
this one is a little closer.

You can see the moon coming up on the right side of the
photo, through the fog. This was an amazing night
to take pictures.

Mission Sunset
Sunset at the Mission, would only be better if that
tree were not in the shot. But that's ok, I like
the trees around here.

Ahhh, the end of summer. I don't have to go to school
tomorrow, but I can't believe it's over already.

Sunset Run
This was a nice evening. We were still recovering
from yesterday's adventure, building a sand castle.
I wanted to finish a roll of film so I can
get some images of our winning castle online!
We spent the evening wandering around the Mission
Rose garden and the Stearns Wharf areas. This image is
from a previous sunset walk near the Wharf. There were less clouds
tonight, but it is always a beautiful area.
As for the castle, our church entered an annual sandcastle contest on
Leadbetter beach this year benefiting the Music
Academy of the West's scholarship program.
My best friend was in charge of the design.
After a few iterations, she settled on "Gracie the Musical
Dragon" (a distant relative of Puff) in honor of our church "Grace Lutheran".
Our dragon was playing a keyboard made of sand and driftwood.
It was a lot of work, all together I estimate we carried
150 gallons of water, but we were rewarded with a first place ribbon
in the adult category! There was also a professional and a
childrens' category, both of which came up with beautiful designs too.
Come back tomorrow to get a look at Gracie.

A View from the Mission
Most of the mission shots you see
don't give you an appreciation for the beautiful setting
of the surrounding Mission grounds. The beautiful color in this
photo is from the setting sun which was behind me to my right.
Although the moisture in the atmosphere makes it hard to
see where sky ends and sea begins,
you can see hints of the outlines of the Channel Islands at the horizon.

La Jolla Evening
We were just marveling at an unseasonably beautiful sunset
here in Santa Barbara tonight. Usually this time of year
the air is too dry to make an interesting show.
But, even with the beautiful show, we still didn't
get anything quite like La Jolla in the winter.
Partially because we have a south facing beach here
and the sun sets over the mountains rather than the water.

Sunset Silhouette
We are having some unseasonably beautiful sunsets.
Usually the real show is reserved for the wet winter season.

Fire in the Sky
Another sunset for the people at yesterday's show.
The combination of beach fog and sunsets can do some
amazing things for a camera.
This was a few days after yesterday's shot,
at the same beach. You can see the flag in the other shot too, to
give you an idea of the perspective.

Seal Beach Sunset
Some days it is easier to get up and
go to a photography show than others.
This is one of the days that was really
hard. Not because I don't like the shows.
It is just an amazing amount of work to
set up a nice display, basically from scratch,
each week.
Fortunately, the people always make it worth the effort.
I am always interested in what people like, and this
photo is for the several people today who asked for sunsets.
This beach is known for it's seals.
I really enjoy watching peoples' reaction to my photos.
And, I get very excited talking to them about
photography and the subjects. I'm not just talking about people
who are interested in purchasing prints either.
Almost every time I go out I talk to someone
who is sure I have spent thousands of dollars
on my equipment. And, wishes they had the money to
spend so they could experiment with photography. I am
always happy to inform them they can get the
same camera (and lens) I use for about $70 on
eBay.
Actually, these conversations always remind me of a joke I like...
A Photographer was at a dinner party. The hostess, while
admiring some of his work, told him how much she loved
his photographs. As she looked through the images
she said "Wow, you must have an amazing camera!"
The evening went on and as the photographer was
about to leave he thanked the hostess for her
hospitality and the delicious dinner she had prepared.
As he left, he added "You must have some amazing pots!"
