Bunny Bread
Happy easter! This week I had the great pleasure of photographing the works of art at the Paris Bakery. And unlike my artwork, theirs is EDIBLE! If you ever find yourself in the Monterey area make sure you stop in for a Napolean and a Chicken Cordon Bleu Sandwhich. And if you're not in the Monterey area, it's worth the trip just to go to the Paris Bakery!

Ye Cold Spring Tavern vertical
A beautiful little spot on the way to Santa Ynez along the San Marcos pass. Cold Spring Tavern is a great place to stop for lunch, and a little bit of history.
From the plaque in the stone...
In 1886 this tavern was known as "Cold Spring Relay Station". It was the half-way stop between "Mattei's Tavern" to the north, and Patrick Kinevan's "Summit House" to the south.
In those days sturdy stagecoaches known as "Mudwagons" traveled the rugged San Marcos Pass. It was here horses were changed and passengers rested and enjoyed the noon-day meal.
In 1900 the Doulton family bought the old tavern with its adjoining 40 acres.
In 1941 they sold it to the Ovington family whose daughter Audrey Ovington owns it to this day.

Stearns Wharf Harbor Restaurant View
This view is from the end of the Sea Center section of Stearns Wharf. The Sea Center has it's own little wing, apart from the main section of the wharf. An area where you can escape the fray of the restaurants and shops and watch the people go by from a distance. And while you're there you can stop in and learn about the amazing world 20 feet below your feet too.

Elevated Wharf View
One more elevated view of Stearns Wharf. I really liked this spot, but the wind was really picking up so it made me a little nervous to have the camera suspended high above the water. But I'll be back to this spot again in the near future.

Santa Barbara View from Stearns Wharf
Recently I had a request for a cover shot that showed a view of Santa Barbara from Stearns Wharf. I have quite a few Stearns Wharf shots but the client was looking for a daytime shot, and most of my wanderings on the Wharf have been in the evening. This was one of the first shots after I raised the camera in this spot, the sea gull was really interested in the camera. I think he was planning on landing on it. He only thought better of it at the very last second.

La Arcada Palms
Just off State Street, at La Arcada Plaza. This is one of those beautiful little spots that you might go right past if you're not paying attention. La Arcada is a nice shpping center on a little walking path back from state street that has some cute little shops and great restaurants. Definitely a great place to spend the afternoon on a beautiful Santa Barbara day.

West Beach View from Stearns Wharf
Recently my wife and I spent an evening playing tourist when friends came into town. We took them out to Stearns Wharf for dinner and to watch the sunset. As we were walking back to our car I took the opportunity to get a few shots of the fading colors in the sky. When you live in a beautiful place like this it's a wonderful way to spend an evening seeing it through someone elses' eyes.

Rhumb Line Restaurant
Today I had the good fortune to meet a group of really creative people at the Rhumb Line restaurant in Ventura. I was able to wander around and explore the restaurant while captureing it all for an upcoming article. The restaurant is beautiful inside and the view is amazing, but more importantly I couldn't take pictures of their food without wanting to eat it myself. The people were a lot of fun too. It's always good to work with people who know how to have a good time while working hard as a team.

Ye Cold Spring Tavern
This is Ye Cold Spring Tavern just over the mountain pass from Santa Barbara. It is nothing short of a local landmark. And they make a great pulled-pork sandwhich. The day we were there we bumpped into the owner as we were leaving, it was a lot of fun talking to him and learning about the history. To say nothing of the great experience of having lunch in a place that has been there for almost 130 years.
The "Cold Spring" referrs to a natural artisian spring that comes out of the ground at the top of a rugged hill, the base of which is just to the left of the photo. The interesting thing that we learned from the owner is that water must come from a higher spot than that hill, which is near the top of our mountains here. So odds are the water flowing naturally from the top of our mountain traveled under the valley from the moutains on the other side.

Paul Shields Chef
Looking through some older shots to add some samples for some new self promotions. This is one of my favorite people shots. This was one of the last projects I did completely on film. And on my favorite film, Fuji Velvia ISO 50 slide film. At the time I could still get a better shot with higher resolution and dynamic range from my old manual camera and my Nikon slide scanner. But the technology was catching up fast.

El Paseo Fountain
The courtyard behind the El Paseo restaurant in Santa Barbara is one of thoes little jewels just off
the beaten path in Santa Barbara that most people walk within 50 feet of without ever knowing it's there.
This is actually an older shot that was originally published as a still image
because the fountain itself was so beautiful. But sometimes it's fun to go back and play with the images
a little and make something new.

Figs and Honey
I love good food as much as photography, that's why some of my favorite clients are local restaurants. This is a first experiment for a new restaurant in Santa Barbara that will be opening soon. Unfortunately it's not really fig season, so it took a little looking but I finally found some nice ones. I took a lot of images this evening before the lights got to be too much (sometime I need a studio with a real air conditioner :) so far this is one of my favorites, but it was a hard choice. More to come!

Silvergreens Sunset
Our winter sunsets are absolutely amazing. Yesterday I was down town running some errands. I had plans to try to catch the sunset, but I knew it was going to be tight so I just brought my camera along for the ride. I was really glad I did. Fortunately there are an abundance of great perches in town to find new angles.

The Palace Grill
This is one of my favorite spots in Santa Barbara, The Palace Grill. The people are friendly the atmosphere is fun and the food is absolutely amazing. The evening I shot this a few years ago I was taking photos of the exterior to send to friends as a memento of a wonderful visit. Just as they were about to open for dinner, the restaurant The owner saw me, after telling him why I was taking the photos he invited me in to get a couple of shots of the interior too.

El Paseo Restaurant Courtyard, Virtual Reality
This spot is a slecluded little courtyard
behind the El Paseo restaurant.
It's an amazing spot all around
but I really love the wonderful Mandeviiia vine.
It's got to be at least fourty years old.

Newburyport Massachusetts Sunset
Another hand-held shot from our
trip to Massachusetts. It was a beautiful
evening. So many brick buildings! Of course
that kind of architecture works in a place
where the ground doesn't shake under
your feet all the time.

Natural Cafe Virtual Tour
A beautiful restaurant with great food!
This is the Natural Cafe on Hitchcock
in Santa Barbara. This tour was taken
while I was there doing a shoot for
a magazine article on the Natural Cafe.
As long as I was shooting the interior
I thought I would have some fun with it.
Click and drag to view in any direction and
be sure to click on the arrows on the floor
to navigate around the restaurant!

The Natural Cafe Hitchcock Twilight
The Natural Cafe is a great place to get some excellent food in a wonderful atmosphere. This is the Hitchcock location in Santa Barbara. This is from a recent shoot for an article in a magazine featuring the restaurant, and their wondeful yet healthy food.

Joe's Cafe
This is from Tuesday night. Tuesdays are farmers' market nights on lower State Street. You can see the booths at the left. The street is closed so it makes it safer, and more interesting, to be down there with my camera. This is about my fourth attempt to get the image I was looking for. There is a large tree (at the left) in front of Joe's. The tree makes for nice pictures, but it makes it a little hard to get a full shot of the front of the building where you can see the whole logo. But, I love a challenge. And this Tuesday my art director (my wife) went with me so that always helps!

Brophy Brothers at the Santa Barbara Harbor
Click the main image for a larger view.
We were feeling like a harbor walk the other evening.
And, it was looking like a nice night for some pictures.
Of course I think every night is a nice night to take
pictures. Even when it's raining... especially when
it's raining. Looking outside right now, I might get some
rain shots sometime in the near future. Although the last couple
of nights it has waited until quite late to shower.
Anyway, the building at the left has, among other things,
a great restaurant called Brophy Brothers where you can sit
on the veranda up stairs
and look out over the harbor. Been a while since I
had a meal there. But I still remember the clam chowder. It was
quite good. And the view is worth the trip too.

Zia Cafe
I spent some time down on State Street again this evening. It was fun even if the number of people out that should probably not be driving home was even higher than usual. Still there were some nice people who were just interested in what the heck I was doing. This is just a couple doors down from last Saturday's shoot. A very nice colorful place. I have not eaten there in a while. (Not since my working in an office downtown days) But as I recall it was really good.
