UCSB University Center at Twilight

UCSB University Center at Twilight

These days UCSB is rather deserted compared to its usually frantic level of energy. But even on a weekend after graduation, while wandering around the beautiful campus I could hear several different groups of people having a good time, cheering and laughing. The size of a small city itself, there is always something interesting going on there.

Santa Barbara County Courthouse Mural Room 360 degree Panorama

There are few more perfect places to take a 360° Panoramic Photo than the Santa Barbara County Courthouse Mural room. The walls of the room depict major events in the history of California. The entire room is a spectacular work of art. Don't forget to look up at the amazing detail on the ceiling.

Santa Barbara Mission Cross Sunset

Santa Barbara Mission Cross Sunset

The Santa Barbara Mission is one of my favorite places to experiment with my camera. It is such a beautiful location it almost guarantees a wonderful evening of photography. This evening I started early when I saw the beautiful cloud formations, but the trick was to predict just where the interesting clouds would be once the sunset really warmed up. When the clouds really put on their show I was glad I went with the really wide angle.

I Modnnari at the Santa Barbara Mission

Every Memorial Day weekend we have a festival at the Santa Barbara Mission. An Italian street painting festival, the entire mission driveway is turned into a temporary art gallery. Hundredes of artists transform the pavement into amazing works of art with nothing more than chalk. Over the next couple of days I'll try to bring some of my favorite views of the festival to you.

Santa Barbara Mission Kitchen

Santa Barbara Mission Kitchen

The Santa Barbara Mission is a beautiful place. But you usually see it from the outside. This is a display of a kitchen as it was for the early inhabitants of the Mission.

From the plaque on the wall:

"This kitchen display is typical of the indoor cooking facilities of the early 1800s. Cooking was done both outdoors and indoors. Indoor cooking was usually done by women over hot, glowing charcoal.

FOOD SOURCES:

Large gardens, orchards and adjacent ranchos supplied the Indians and Mission community with vegetables, fruit livestock and grains such as wheat, barley, oats and corn. THE ORIGINAL ADOBE CAN BE SEEN ON THE LEFT SIDE WALL."

Mission San Miguel Bell Tower

Mission San Miguel Bell Tower

View of the bells at the Mission San Miguel. The red tiles in the foreground are on the top of the low wall that surrounds the mission. As with many of the California Missions, this mission has had a troubled life. But the people who care for it now are doing an excellent job restoring it to the thing of beauty it deserves to be. The Mission San Miguel is California Historical Landmark No. 326.

Courthouse Clocktower Morning Colors

A beautiful view of an absolutely amazing example of local architecture, the Santa Barbara County Courthouse.

This is an older shot from a permit shoot of the Courthouse. There seems to be a lot of demand for Courthouse images lately, (not hard to see why,) so I have been trying to find some interesting unpublished images to add some variety.

Santa Barbara Mission Millstone

Santa Barbara Mission Millstone

I'm always wandering around the Santa Barbara Mission looking for a new angle or a veiw that I have not noticed before. This was at the end of a long day of shooting, as the last glow of the sunset was slipping behind the mission. These pepper trees are a beautiful part of the look of the mission and they are prominent in many of my photos. The interesting details I love about this shot are the old millstone and the stone bench under the pepper tree.

The Getty Center Magical Sunset

The Getty Center Magical Sunset

The Getty Center is as beautiful as the art it contains. This was about twenty minutes after sunset with a nice glow in the western sky. This spot by the fountain in front of the West Pavillion is one of my favorites but there are many spectacular views to choose from.

Twin Cities Community Hospital

Twin Cities Community Hospital

This is an initial test shot from a recent project. Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton just finished a large building project and they wanted to show off their beautiful, state-of-the-art hospital. I really enjoyed this project. It was interesting talking to one of the hospital directors as he gave me the grand tour. The main part of the interior shoot took about four hours, and over that time his pride in his hospital and the level of care they provide was quite evident. It was the kind of pride you would expect from a people who care for their patients like they were family.

If you'd like to see the finished product have a look at the tour on their website, www.TwinCitiesHospital.com

Sunken Gardens Twilight

Sunken Gardens Twilight

A wonderful spot any time of day, the Courthouse Sunken Gardens take on a magical quality at night. The lighting makes for wonderful photo opportunities that would not otherwise be possible. I like to experiment with architectural photography later in the evening than might seem to work. As long as there is still blue in the sky to complement the buildings it's a good time for photos.

The Getty Center Main Garden, Virtual Reality

The Getty Center Main Garden, Virtual Reality

Another hand-held virtual reality shot from The Getty Center in Los Angeles. From a distance the main garden looks like a very cool topiary hedge maze, and it is, but to find the Minotaur in the center of this labyrinth you need a gondola. Because it is in the middle of an amazing fountain.

This, of course starts the discussion of how do you think they trim the maze. Because it's really nicely groomed. It's not like they could drain the fountain every time it needs a trim. Gondoliers with hedge trimmers? Hope they're not electric trimmers. Oh well I guess we'll have to chalk that up to the mysteries of the ages.

If you'd like to see a great virtual reality shot of another fountain in The Getty Center at sunset take a look at February 6th

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Sanctuary

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Sanctuary

This is an iconic little church out in Montecito, California. It's image has popped up everywhere from album covers to advertising according to the nice people in the office. It is a wonderful example of south-western architecture. It seems like it would not be out of place in the middle of the desert, or southern Mexico somewhere.

Spirit of the Ocean

Spirit of the Ocean

A sunset view of the "Spirit of the Ocean" fountain at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse. The fountain recently underwent a major restoration. The original sculpture (seen in this photo) now resides in the Courthouse basement. A new sculpture was lovingly carved from massive blocks of stone to match the weather worn original.

Courthouse Clocktower from the Garden Balcony

Courthouse Clocktower from the Garden Balcony

Another in a series of Santa Barbara Courthouse images I have been preparing for an upcoming project.

This is the view from the balcony above the Courthouse Sunken Gardens looking toward the Clocktower. The evening was early enough to still get all the beautiful details of the architecture, but late enough to see the beautiful landscape lighting.

Santa Barbara County Courthouse Anacapa Archway

Santa Barbara County Courthouse Anacapa Archway

One of the most famous views in Santa Barbara, the County Courthouse from the Anacapa side offers veiws of the beautiful archway and clock tower. The tower is the location of many weddings and is just an amazing place to see a panoramic view of the city.

Bridge of Sighs

Bridge of Sighs

The Santa Barbara County Courthouse is one of the most beautiful buildings in California. This wing, unlike the others, is much more beautiful on the outside. The tower and the rest of the wing on the right of this photo were the former county jail. The bridge connecting the main part of the courthouse to the Jail wing is called the "Bridge of Sighs" after a bridge (Ponte dei Sospiri) in Venice, Italy. It was the bridge that was said to be the last view prisoners would have of beautiful Venice before they were led to their cells, and so they would sigh as they saw the last glimpse of the beautiful city. The Santa Barbara County Courthouse is a California Historical Landmark NO. 1037.

Sunset at the Vedanta Temple Planet View

This is a beautiful spot in the Montecito hills, made even more beautiful by the amazing sunset. 360 degree photos allow for fun with different projections, this planet view (or stereographic) projection is one of the most fun.

Santa Barbara Historical Museum Panorama

In the middle of downtown Santa Barbara there are some amazing spots. The Santa Barbara Historical Musuem is a place where you can see the classic spanish architecture that our city is famous for right in the middle of the city.

The Getty Center Fountain at Sunset, Virtual Reality

This is from a beautiful evening at the Getty Center in Los Angeles. It was a great day with lots of beautiful art, but I have to admit I liked the architecture even more. And I don't think I'm the only one. There are at least six other people in this photo taking a picture at this moment.

Getty Sunset Perch

Getty Sunset Perch

The Getty is a wonderful place full of beauty. And the art is amazing too! This was a beautiful evening. The light from the setting sun made the amazing architecture on the hill glow. This spot on a high balcony was the perfect place to watch the show. It was a great place to watch the people go by too.
