Santa Barbara Mission Twilight
This was a long exposure. The exposure
time made the reflection much more interesting.
it gave the effect of the sharpness near the bottom of the
image getting blurry near the top where the water
was falling from the top of the fountain.

Evening Fog
The thing that looks like a large cloud on the
ground between the palm trees and the mountain
is our evening fog. It is caused by the marine
layer. A warm cushion of air from further out in the Pacific
that slides in across the cool coastal waters.
The water is cool here because it follows the pacific currents down the coast from
cold places in the north.
Given the right conditions,
the fog slides in as the sun goes down and will not
leave the beach till around ten in the morning.
Of course, in June, the fog covers the whole city
and only leaves for about ten minutes in the afternoon.
We call that "June Gloom".
As long as you can stay back from, or above it, it
is actually very beautiful. My office at UCSB
used to sit at the perfect point at the limit of the
fog. I could watch it swirl outside my window,
but it never really got to my office.

Courthouse Clock Tower
I'm always trying to find a different angle on my subjects.
Especially ones as photographed as the Santa Barbara Courthouse.
This is the courthouse clock tower... from the inside, straight up!
Cool architecture in there, but I rarely have the right film on hand to get
shots of the inside. This was from my recent experiments with
a rental Canon 20D digital camera.

Courthouse Detail
I always appreciate the kind feedback
I have received when I have displayed my photos. I particularly
love the stories I get from people when my images make them think
of something near to their hearts.
Many times I leave with a much deeper appreciation for my subjects.
I was looking through my recent images
for a good Santa Barbara image for Mary Ann,
and this is what I came up with. The day I took this was a bit overcast
so the wider "city" images are not as exciting, They are more
"ideas" that I am building on for future images.
But the detail in this image reminds me of another
person that stopped by the La Cumbre Art Walk a couple of times.
She told me about her Grandfather who worked on the
stone detail at the base of the Courthouse. If I remember
correctly, some of his work is near the fountain.
I have always loved taking detail shots of the courthouse especially
since there's already a wide variety of angles on the bigger views out there.
Now, every time I look at these details, I think about the incredible
talent that went into creating them, especially by one particular grandfather.

Pelican Christmas
You have any idea how many fish I had to give him to get
him to pose like that? He drove an especially
hard bargain when it came to wearing the hat!
Merry Christmas!

Santa Barbara Beach Panorama
(click to see a bigger version)
Ok I got a new toy! This is actually seven images
stitched together in a panorama by a cool little
tool named PTGui.
Actually it is quite powerful. I am a bit fanatical
about image quality and size. I usually work with
16 bit originals from my scanner and the this
tool can work with them which is rare.
To truly appreciate this image you have to realize
the full resolution version is over 500 megabytes
and could easily be printed almost nine feet wide.

Santa Barbara Sunset
There is an artist in the Sunday Art walk on
Cabrillo Blvd. (where this shot is taken) who
does woodcut images, silhouettes with a gradient color in the
background. These evenings, the beautiful
cloudless sunsets remind me of those.

Savoy
I have been a little behind in the photo of the day.
So I thought it would be nice to give you another glimpse
of the one of the many projects I have going at the moment.
This is a beautiful new restaurant
on Figueroa. They have
been kind enough to allow me to display my artwork,
and I am working on capturing their beautiful atmosphere
for their marketing materials.
This Sunday they are starting a Sunday brunch, I'm looking forward to that!

Stearns Sunset
Fall has finally arrived. Last week still felt like summer.
During the summer there is not usually enough
moisture in the air to make an interesting sunset
so I always enjoy this time of year.

Savoy Truffles
This is a new place that just opened on Figueroa Street
in Santa Barbara, "Savoy Truffles."
They were kind enough to display my
photos in their restaurant. And, I am now working on
capturing some images of their beautiful place.
They actually took this place down to the studs and
crafted an incredible environment inside.
The food is excellent, not to mention all natural.
I can highly recommend the strawberry spinach salad
and the cappuccino (the one in the photo did not last long
after this was taken, it was gooood!)
Perhaps best of all, the couple who own the restaurant are locals who grew up here.

Santa Barbara Sunset
We live in an odd little spot on the coast.
If you look at a map of the California
coastline there is a small area that
runs from east to west. That is where Santa Barbara
is. As a result, the sun does not set over the water
as you would expect it to on the west coast.
Moving straight out from the coast,
once you pass the channel islands about 25 miles
out, the closet land is Antarctica.

Now there's somethin you don't see every day!
Ok, maybe it's a little late for Solstice photos.
But, it has been hotter lately than the day I took this
photo so I was starting to wonder just what season this is.

Old Sea Center
Just went to the new Sea Center recently, it is very cool.
This one burned down but they had been planning on remodeling anyway.
If you are ever in the Santa Barbara area this is a great place
to learn about the Ocean, especially if you bring kids!
This shot was taken the same evening as this one.

Dolphins at the Wharf
I really like the water in this image.
The long exposure hid the fact that the water was
moving pretty well in the fountain.
If you look closely you can see where the drops of water
leave the edge of the fountain and hit the pool
below. But they disappear in between. The surface of the water
was covered with ripples which caused the blurred surface
as opposed to a smooth reflective surface of a less agitated pool at night.

Harbor Moonrise
You can see the moon coming up on the right side of the
photo, through the fog. This was an amazing night
to take pictures.

Twilight Clocktower
This was a long exposure on a breezy evening.
You can tell by the softness of the trees.
But, that actually made the bright clocktower more
visible through the tree than it would have been
in a daylight shot.
I had to find a nice Santa Barbara architecture image
today for a fellow
photographer from the area who now lives in Texas.

Summer Solstice
This is my photographic evidence that the summer
was way too short. This image was on a roll of
film that was still in one of my cameras this week.

Mission Sunset
Sunset at the Mission, would only be better if that
tree were not in the shot. But that's ok, I like
the trees around here.

Solstice Parade
I have never been crazy about parades.
They have always been something to watch on TV
while my dad and I make Macadamia Nut Stuffing
from a Hawaiian cookbook. Our task on Thanksgiving
while my Mom took care of everything else!
But I must say, since moving to Santa Barbara I have
learned to enjoy one tradition... The "Summer
Solstice Celebration." It is always a really creative
parade held on the Saturday closest to the Summer solstice.
It is, by far, the most enjoyable parade and celebration I
have ever seen.
Oh, by the way, the person in the bird suit is our
Mayor, Marty Blum.

A View from the Mission
Most of the mission shots you see
don't give you an appreciation for the beautiful setting
of the surrounding Mission grounds. The beautiful color in this
photo is from the setting sun which was behind me to my right.
Although the moisture in the atmosphere makes it hard to
see where sky ends and sea begins,
you can see hints of the outlines of the Channel Islands at the horizon.

Dr. Seuss Was Here
This is a building they are just finishing
on Cota Street. The front wall and gate
makes it look a little like something
out of a Dr. Seuss story. Actually
it looked like it was gonna be
a lot crazier when it was only half done.
It is actually quite nice now.
I have heard the developer is planning something
else next to my church.
Could be a cool new photography subject!

Storke Tower
I used to work right by this tower. It was particularly interesting
during the holidays. They played Christmas Carols most of the day.

Nighttime Mission
The cool thing about this long exposure
is that fact that it made the surface of the water look
like glass. If you look closely you can see that there
are blurry areas near the center of the fountain where the
water was running down. But most of the waves that moved
slowly across the surface disappeared.
I thought the motion of the ripples across the water would
blur a larger part of the reflection but sometimes you get
a pleasant surprise.

East Beach Sunset
This is looking back at East beach from Stearns Wharf
in Santa Barbara. I like the single glowing cloud.
It really makes the sky a lot more interesting.

Lotusland Walkway
The patterns on the sides of this walkway are
actually rounded stones. From this
angle it looks like the center of a Labyrinth.
Hmm... I wonder where the Minotaur is...
