Harbor Earth Shadow

Santa Barbara Harbor with the Shadow of the Earth in the background
I really love this shot and all the others I took along with it. It was a great evening right after a Photography show walking with my dad at the Santa Barbara harbor.Aside from the beauty of the scene and the great memories it brings back (as most of my photos do for me), I like the science in this shot. If you poke around the photo of the day it's not hard to notice other evidence of the left side of my brain creeping into my photography. In this case, the dark blue near the horizon that slopes upward to the left is what intrigues me. It is actually the shadow of the Earth. As the sun was slipping further below the horizon behind me on my right side, it still lit the atmosphere above me. It is easiest to see this effect looking out over the ocean so there are no hills or even buildings and trees to block it.
BTW, I finally got back to the photo of the day thanks to a really nice post the other day from Mary Ann. Always wonderful to know people are enjoying my creativity. One of the many things I was doing in my absence was working on a new gallery site of my Santa Barbara photos... www.ImagesOfSantaBarbara.com.
Thanks again Mary Ann!

| I hope you will understand what I'm going to say, but I went through the images with tears flowing. Sometimes I forget how much I miss Santa Barbara (and I have lived on the East Coast for about 50 years!!). I visited in 1965 and didn't get back again until 2004. It has really changed when you look at the entire city, but the heart of it is still the small town I remember. My Mom and I went back expecting to be overwhelmed by changes but didn't expect to be able to drive around town and not get lost. It is especially surprising since I was 11 when we left. I found all the old places that I loved. Even the house that we lived in the last five years we were there is still there - unbelievable since it was on the Mesa and so many of the old places have been torn down and rebuilt. We went back in 2005 and in Dec. my Mom passed away. We were still talking about those two trips and the fun things we did (Harbor restaurant - whale watching - visiting the churches we used to go to - the Old Mission - so many things). I will always be grateful that we were able to visit again. Maybe in the next couple of years I'll get back again. In the meantime thank you for allowing me to visit every day (if you haven't posted a new one there are so many others to revisit). It has been quite a gift. Thanks. Mary Ann (PS I'll be getting in touch some time in November to buy a couple of those gorgeous prints!) | |

| 2:31 a.m. local time.Depression keeps me awake. i'm snoopin' the web, looking for ideas to start a watercolor.I was lookingfor photos,close-ups, of seeds. my search brought me to your site and somehow i ended up looking at this photo. i'm not usually a big fan of boats docked pictures. seems like every water color set ever owned as a child had a pictureof boats on the lid. but when i opened this page and saw this photo, my jaw dropped and i was in awe. beautiful. absolutely beautiful. Thank you for the bright spot in my day. | |
