Julia Heliconian [Dryas iulia] Butterfly in a Strawberry Tree [Arbutus unedo]
This guy thought he had a good hiding place. And actually, he did. I was impressed by how his wings blended with the angle of the leaves. Fortunately, I found him anyway.

| I didnt know strawberries grew on trees. Where can I get one? Are they ornamental strawberries or the shortcake kind? | |

| My money would have been "ornamental," but apparently that is not the case. The little white flower turns into a strawberry looking fruit. Apparently that is where the similarities end though. Some brave souls make an alcoholic beverage out of the fruits. But apparently the Latin name "unedo" means "eat one" as in "You'll only want to eat one." And it sounds like they make dogs feel sick too, so don't "release the hounds" around it! All this cool information and more can be found here... http://www.pfaf.org/leaflets/straw_tree.php. (My lovely wife found that page for me). |
