Stearns Sunset Panorama

More shots from yesterday's wharf walk.
Actually, it's a combination of 9 shots.
It was a beautiful evening.

Stearns Twilight
Tonight we took a walk on Stearns Wharf. It was hot and we were hoping to cool off. Of course, we were not the only ones with that idea. It was pretty crowded, but it was a nice walk and a beautiful evening.

Santa Barbara Beach Bums
We have not been seeing the sun much lately. But, it is a beautiful day when we do!

Twilight Mission
By request!
I had someone leave feed back who was interested in
photos of the Mission Santa Barbara.
(see August 12, '05)
I am developing a tool that will allow everyone to browse the
previous photos of the day by keyword and various
other tools to allow easy navigation. I do have the calendar,
if you have not seen that, be sure to click on the link
on the upper right of the screen. That will allow you
to see thumbnails of the photo of the day a month at a time.
Now, on to the Mission. This is the Mission Santa Barbara “Queen of the Missions.”
It was founded on December 4, 1786 by Father Fermin Lasuen. It was the tenth of
21 Franciscan missions in California. It holds the distinction of being the only
one to remain in continuous use since the day it was founded. Named for Saint Barbara,
and founded on the day of her annual memorial feast, it continues to operate as home
of the Saint Barbara Parish. And it is a place that always makes me happy to
be a photographer!
Here is a list of my other images of the Mission Santa Barbara
and her grounds on the photo of the day.

Santa Barbara Mission Twilight
This was a long exposure. The exposure time made the reflection much more interesting. it gave the effect of the sharpness near the bottom of the image getting blurry near the top where the water was falling from the top of the fountain.

Pelican Christmas
You have any idea how many fish I had to give him to get
him to pose like that? He drove an especially
hard bargain when it came to wearing the hat!
Merry Christmas!

Santa Barbara Beach Panorama
(click to see a bigger version)
Ok I got a new toy! This is actually seven images
stitched together in a panorama by a cool little
tool named PTGui.
Actually it is quite powerful. I am a bit fanatical
about image quality and size. I usually work with
16 bit originals from my scanner and the this
tool can work with them which is rare.
To truly appreciate this image you have to realize
the full resolution version is over 500 megabytes
and could easily be printed almost nine feet wide.

Carmel Beach Fire
The people on the beach look almost insignificant under this
awesome display. And, believe me that is how
it made you feel! And, at the same time, it filled
you with awe.
Some days I see things that make me
wanna kick myself for leaving my camera at home. The days
like this one make up for them many times over!

Santa Barbara Sunset
There is an artist in the Sunday Art walk on Cabrillo Blvd. (where this shot is taken) who does woodcut images, silhouettes with a gradient color in the background. These evenings, the beautiful cloudless sunsets remind me of those.

Backlit Poppy
I had fun getting this image. I actually had to lay
on the ground to get this perspective. (and it was
a very HOT day to lay on the sidewalk)
This is one of my favorite subjects, in fact it was
the subject of the first image on this site.

Stearns Sunset
Fall has finally arrived. Last week still felt like summer. During the summer there is not usually enough moisture in the air to make an interesting sunset so I always enjoy this time of year.

Now there's somethin you don't see every day!
Ok, maybe it's a little late for Solstice photos. But, it has been hotter lately than the day I took this photo so I was starting to wonder just what season this is.

Laguna Sunset
My friend has taken up Sumi-e Ink painting and she is quite good at
it. (I'll add some links once she has her images online.)
I think this image has a bit of Japanese art feel to it. Although,
it would probably have to have fewer branches to qualify. Perhaps
this one is a little closer.

Harbor Moonrise
You can see the moon coming up on the right side of the photo, through the fog. This was an amazing night to take pictures.

Happy Cows
You can't really make them out at this size but there is
a heard of cows in the distance on the left side of the image.
If you are not familiar with it, the California Cheese industry
runs a cool ad campaign about their happy cows. You see,
they are much happier because they live in beautiful
rolling fields in sunny California so they make good cheese.
Those commercials always make me think of this
photo and the beautiful day I took it.
I think it's time for another vacation, then again, when isn't it?

Twilight Clocktower
This was a long exposure on a breezy evening.
You can tell by the softness of the trees.
But, that actually made the bright clocktower more
visible through the tree than it would have been
in a daylight shot.
I had to find a nice Santa Barbara architecture image
today for a fellow
photographer from the area who now lives in Texas.

Summer Solstice
This is my photographic evidence that the summer was way too short. This image was on a roll of film that was still in one of my cameras this week.

Mission Sunset
Sunset at the Mission, would only be better if that tree were not in the shot. But that's ok, I like the trees around here.

Poppy Pod
It has been an amazing season for California Poppies.
Which has made a lot of fun for me and my camera.
Sometimes I keep at a certain subject to try to
work out as many angles as I can, and they have kept
me busy this summer.
Now for the hard part... I have to pick my favorites!
As we move into the fall season the art show season is picking
up. And, I am in the process of trying to increase the number
of images I display. I have been seeing a few repeat visitors now
that I have been doing this for almost a year (which is
very exciting) and I love to have something new to show them!
I am not sure what format it will be in, but this will
be one of the images that will make it's debut soon.

Solstice Parade
I have never been crazy about parades.
They have always been something to watch on TV
while my dad and I make Macadamia Nut Stuffing
from a Hawaiian cookbook. Our task on Thanksgiving
while my Mom took care of everything else!
But I must say, since moving to Santa Barbara I have
learned to enjoy one tradition... The "Summer
Solstice Celebration." It is always a really creative
parade held on the Saturday closest to the Summer solstice.
It is, by far, the most enjoyable parade and celebration I
have ever seen.
Oh, by the way, the person in the bird suit is our
Mayor, Marty Blum.

A View from the Mission
Most of the mission shots you see don't give you an appreciation for the beautiful setting of the surrounding Mission grounds. The beautiful color in this photo is from the setting sun which was behind me to my right. Although the moisture in the atmosphere makes it hard to see where sky ends and sea begins, you can see hints of the outlines of the Channel Islands at the horizon.

La Jolla Evening
We were just marveling at an unseasonably beautiful sunset here in Santa Barbara tonight. Usually this time of year the air is too dry to make an interesting show. But, even with the beautiful show, we still didn't get anything quite like La Jolla in the winter. Partially because we have a south facing beach here and the sun sets over the mountains rather than the water.

Bells at Mission Santa Inéz
This is the bell tower from inside the mission grounds.

La Purisima Mission Bell
This was taken the first day experimenting with a new present,
a polarizing filter. It made the sky much more intense.
There is a never-ending supply of wonderful subjects
at the California missions.

Nighttime Mission
The cool thing about this long exposure is that fact that it made the surface of the water look like glass. If you look closely you can see that there are blurry areas near the center of the fountain where the water was running down. But most of the waves that moved slowly across the surface disappeared. I thought the motion of the ripples across the water would blur a larger part of the reflection but sometimes you get a pleasant surprise.
