Garden Peach

"Garden Peach" tomato
We're finally trying to get back to a normal life here. We recently had a wild fire in the hills near Santa Barbara, "the Gap Fire". We were not warned to evacuate where we live, but we did anyway when the sky turned brown and it looked like the middle of the night at 6pm. I'll get some photos online from some of those crazy days, but right now I just have to say thank you to all the amazing fire fighters and the families who worry about them when they are on the job. Thanks to them not one house was lost.Still, through all the craziness, I have been taking the time to tinker with my camera. This is a beautiful translucent striped tomato variety called a Garden Peach. This is one of the last ones my wife coaxed off the plant and it is beautiful. It is actually fuzzy like a peach. And this one is still sitting here waiting to be the subject of more photos. But the others from the plant have been quite delicious.

| Welcome back | |
| I've been worried about you guys. I remember when I was a kid we used to have those wildfires and it was always a scary time. The sky would be red at night and the air was heavy and hot. I'm so glad you are okay. I've missed the daily photos, but I'm glad you are safe. Mary Ann |

| Hi Mary Ann! Yeah, it was wild. We were close enough that there was so much ash in the air you could not breathe outside. And the strange thing is people were still jogging and exercising outside. How good can that be for your health!? Might as well smoke a cigar while you are jogging too. July 3rd was the worst of it. That is the day it looked like Goleta was going to burn. The wind came down the hill in the afternoon and there was a column of smoke as wide as the city blotting out the sun. That's when we took the bird and ran. The thing we were worried about was having an evacuation order when we were away from home so that we could not get back in to get him. They don't make it easy when you have pets. Not to minimize the heroics of the firefighters, but I think they would be the first to admit that it was all up to mother nature at that point. If the sun-downer winds off the mountains really took over it could have been just like the Painted Cave fire 13 years ago. That burned down the mountain and through the city in about 45 minutes. There is one nice thing that came out of all this craziness though. When rebuilding my office after evacuating we made a nice area for a photo studio (that is where I took the Garden Peach photo). So that should give me the opportunity to get the Photo of the day back on track! Good to hear from you as always! Hope you are having a great summer! -Bill |
